DP Monchie Redoble has recently completed filming a commercial for Procter & Gamble in the Philippines. The commercial was for P & G’s Olay Natural White Bar and was shot at the beautiful location of Jardin de Miramar, Antipolo City about 25km east of the capital, Manila.

“The brief was to give the commercial a fresh and clean look,” explains Redoble “but I also had to bear in mind that it was aimed at a young audience so I knew I had to produce something that was bright, clean and high-fashion. The model was Julia Montes, a Filipina actress and commercial model, who talks about how confident she is to reveal her natural fair skin.”

“The shoot took place in a rest house with a spacious garden that is also used for weddings and other events. The original intent was to shoot on a screened-in porch with a garden view using mixed lighting to give a classic warm interiors look with cool outdoors and strong highlights. The weather put a stop to that though as the monsoon rains started pouring in. I needed to quickly re-think and adjust the set and the lighting so that the rain and gloomy weather wouldn’t be seen in the shot” says Redoble.

“It was a good thing that we were shooting on film,” he continues “because we were able to stretch it to it's limits to provide the director and colorist more room to adjust it in post-production. I used KODAK VISION3 Color Negative Film 500T 5219 with a Schneider classic soft filter as I like the softness and the effects it gives when shooting skin care products.”

The camera was an ARRI 435 with a range of Ultra Prime lenses from 16mm to 135mm. Although many of my commercials are shot digitally, I prefer film as it gives the latitude and definition that you won’t get shooting HD, especially when you need to show the softness and glow of the skin. Film makes it easier in that you don’t have to worry so much about your highlights burning out and getting that nasty electronic look. Film also gives the polished and glossy look that needs to be achieved as the minimum requirement of a beauty commercial.” Redoble concluded.
